About GPA & CGPA Calculator
Work out this semester's GPA from your grades and credit hours, or roll it into your running CGPA. Built around the 4.00 scale used by Malaysian universities, with both calculations on the same page.
GPA and CGPA are not the same number
GPA is one semester on its own. CGPA is every semester you have completed, weighted together. Your GPA can swing a long way in a single bad term while your CGPA barely moves, and that gap is the whole reason students confuse the two.
The practical consequence is that CGPA gets harder to shift as you go. A 4.00 semester in your first year moves your CGPA substantially; the same semester in your final year moves it a fraction, because it is competing with everything that came before.
Credit hours are weights, not labels
The most common calculation mistake is averaging grade points directly. If you scored an A in a 4-credit subject and a C in a 1-credit subject, your GPA is nowhere near the midpoint — the A is doing four times the work.
The correct method multiplies each grade's points by its credit hours, adds those up, and divides by the total credits. That is what this tool does, and it is why you must enter the credits rather than just the grades.
Check the scale against your own handbook
This calculator uses the scale most Malaysian public universities follow: A+ and A both 4.00, A- 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00, down to F at zero.
Institutions do vary. Some award 4.25 for an A+, some do not use A+ at all, and some private and international programmes run a different scheme entirely. Your faculty handbook is the authority — if its table differs from the one here, its numbers are the ones that count toward your transcript.
Working backwards from a target
The CGPA mode is more useful than it first looks, because you can run it in reverse. Enter your current CGPA and credits, then try different values for this semester's GPA to see what each one would do to the total.
That answers the question students actually have — not what my CGPA is, but what I need this semester to reach 3.50 in time for the Dean's List, a scholarship renewal, or an honours classification. There is a fuller walkthrough of the arithmetic at cerdikcerdik.com/blog/how-to-calculate-cgpa.
Frequently asked questions
How is CGPA calculated?
Multiply your previous CGPA by your previous total credits, add this semester's GPA multiplied by this semester's credits, then divide by the combined credits. It is a weighted average, which is why a light semester moves it less than a heavy one.
Does this scale match my university?
It matches the scale used by most Malaysian public universities, but institutions differ — particularly over whether A+ is worth 4.00 or more. Check your faculty handbook and use its figures if they differ.
What CGPA do I need for the Dean's List or First Class?
Thresholds are set by each institution, but 3.50 for the Dean's List and 3.70 for First Class Honours are the most common. Your university's academic regulations are the only authority on yours.
Do repeated or failed subjects count?
That depends on your university's policy — some replace the original grade, some average both attempts, and some keep the fail in the CGPA permanently. Enter whichever grades your transcript actually carries.
