Why you cannot just divide the days by 365
Take the days between two dates and divide by 365 and you will be wrong, because roughly one year in four has 366 days. Divide by 365.25 instead and you will be less wrong, but still wrong, because months are not equal either.
Age is a calendar calculation, not an arithmetic one. Someone born on 31 January is one month old on 28 February in a common year, and the only way to get that right is to count calendar months and then the leftover days, which is what this tool does.
Leap day birthdays
If you were born on 29 February, three years out of four have no such date. This calculator handles it by falling back to the last day of the month, so your birthday counts as 28 February in a common year and 29 February when one comes around.
That is the most common convention and it matches how most Malaysian institutions treat it in practice, but it is a convention rather than a law of nature — some systems roll forward to 1 March instead. If a legal deadline turns on the exact day, check which rule applies to you.
Where exact age actually matters in Malaysia
School entry is the common one: children start Standard 1 in the year they turn seven, so the cut-off is the calendar year rather than the school term. Parents of December babies check this constantly.
It shows up again for the minimum retirement age, for insurance — many policies price on age next birthday rather than current age, so a policy bought a week before a birthday can cost more — and for anything where a form asks for age as of a specific date rather than today.
Counting the days between two dates
The second mode answers a different question: how many days from here to there. Useful for notice periods, project deadlines, visa durations, loan terms and the gap between now and an exam.
One thing to be careful about is whether your deadline counts inclusively. A 30-day notice period starting on the 1st might end on the 30th or the 31st depending on whose rules apply, and the difference is a full day. This tool gives you the plain count between the two dates; whether to add a day for an inclusive count is a question about the rule, not the arithmetic.

How is exact age calculated?
By counting whole calendar years first, then whole months, then the days left over. That is why the day figure changes with the length of the month rather than following a fixed 30-day approximation.
What happens with a 29 February birthday?
In years without a 29 February, the calculator uses 28 February, which is the most widely used convention. In leap years it uses the real date.
Does the result include today?
The day count is the plain difference between the two dates. If a rule you are following counts both the start and end day, add one to the figure shown.
Does my time zone affect the answer?
No. Dates are treated as calendar dates rather than moments in time, so the result is the same wherever you open the page and daylight saving elsewhere cannot shift it.
