Guess a five-letter word in six tries. Each guess comes back colour-coded: green for a letter in the right place, yellow for a letter in the word but somewhere else, grey for a letter that is not there at all. The word list holds 480 five-letter English words, so a new one every time.
Your first guess should be a question, not an attempt
Beginners try to guess the word on the first line. Strong players do not — they use the opening to eliminate as much of the alphabet as possible, and expect to learn rather than to win.
A good opener uses five different common letters with two or three vowels spread across positions: words like CRANE, SLATE and ADIEU are popular for exactly this reason. Whether you happen to hit green squares is almost beside the point; what matters is how much the answer narrows.
Grey letters are worth as much as green ones
It feels like a wasted guess when everything comes back grey, but eliminating five letters is real progress — often more than a single green would give you. The information is in what the word cannot be as much as in what it is.
The on-screen keyboard tracks this for you, dimming letters you have ruled out. Glance at it before every guess rather than trying to hold the eliminations in your head; almost every avoidable loss comes from re-using a letter that was already grey.
Do not burn guesses confirming a yellow
A yellow letter tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not in that position. Both halves matter. Players routinely re-place a yellow into a spot they have already tested, which wastes a line learning something they knew.
With three or four lines left it is usually worth playing a word that tests new letters rather than one that could be right. Save the committed guess for when the field has narrowed to two or three candidates.
The endgame trap
The hardest positions are not the ones where you know nothing — they are the ones where you know almost everything. If you have _IGHT with two guesses left, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT and FIGHT all fit and you cannot test them one at a time.
The way out is a guess you know is wrong: a word containing L, M, N and R will tell you which family you are in and leave the last line for the answer. Spending a guess on a word that cannot be correct feels wasteful and is often the only move that works.
