Number Memory measures one specific thing: digit span, the number of digits you can hold in working memory and repeat back correctly. A number flashes on screen, disappears, and you type it. Get it right and the next one is a digit longer.
What your score actually means
The average adult digit span sits around seven — the famous 'seven, plus or minus two' from George Miller's 1956 paper, and the reason local phone numbers settled on the length they did. Reaching 9 or 10 puts you comfortably above average.
Past about 11, almost nobody is holding raw digits any more. They are chunking, which is a learnable technique rather than a gift.
Chunking is how people get past 10
Working memory holds roughly seven items, but an item is whatever your brain treats as a single unit. Read as separate digits, '1', '9', '5', '7' is four items. Read as a year, 1957 is one. That is the entire trick.
Practised players stop reading digits one at a time and start grouping them in pairs or triples: 482913 becomes 48, 29, 13 — three items instead of six. Malaysians have a ready-made advantage here, because number words in Bahasa Malaysia are short and rhythmic, and many people find they chunk faster in BM than in English even when they think in English the rest of the day.
Say it, don't picture it
Most people instinctively try to hold a mental image of the number. The phonological loop — the part of working memory that rehearses sound — is considerably more reliable for digits than visual memory is.
So repeat the digits under your breath as they appear, keep repeating through the pause, and type them the moment the box appears. Any gap where you stop rehearsing is exactly where digits go missing.
How the game runs
You start at three digits with three lives. Each number is shown a little longer than the last, so a long number is never unfairly brief — the difficulty lives entirely in holding it, not in reading it. Lose all three lives and the run ends at your highest cleared level.

What is a good score on Number Memory?
Seven and up is around or above the adult average, and 9 or 10 is strong. Most regular players add two or three digits to their starting level within a few weeks, almost entirely by learning to chunk.
Will practising this improve my memory in general?
It reliably makes you better at this task and at remembering numbers day to day. Whether that transfers to unrelated kinds of memory is genuinely debated among researchers, and the honest answer is that brain-training transfer effects are weaker than the marketing suggests. Play it because it is a sharp two-minute challenge.
Can I write the number down?
Nothing stops you, but it turns a working-memory test into a copying test and the score stops meaning anything.
Why do I score worse some days?
Working memory is unusually sensitive to sleep, stress and background distraction — a poor night or a noisy room can cost a digit or two. That variation is normal, so judge yourself on your best over a week rather than any single run.
