About Color Match

A colour word appears, printed in ink that may or may not be that colour. Press YES if they match and NO if they do not, as many times as you can in thirty seconds. It sounds trivial and it is one of the hardest games here, for reasons psychologists have been studying since 1935.

This is the Stroop effect

John Ridley Stroop published the original experiment in 1935, and it has become one of the most reproduced findings in all of psychology. When the word GREEN is printed in red ink, naming the ink takes measurably longer and produces more errors than when the two agree.

The reason is that reading is automatic for a literate adult. You cannot look at a familiar word and not read it, so the word's meaning arrives whether you want it or not and has to be actively suppressed before you can answer about the ink.

What it actually measures

The Stroop task is a standard measure of inhibitory control — the ability to hold back an automatic response in favour of a deliberate one. It is the same capacity you use to not check your phone when it buzzes mid-conversation.

That makes your score here less about eyesight or speed than about attention. People reliably do worse when tired or distracted, and children do worse than adults because reading is not yet automatic enough to interfere strongly.

The bilingual angle

Here is something worth trying: play a few rounds in English, then switch the site to Bahasa Malaysia and play again. For most Malaysians the interference is not identical in both languages — the effect tends to be strongest in whichever language you read most fluently.

Can you get better at it?

Somewhat, though not by trying harder. The technique that helps most is defocusing slightly — looking at the word without reading it sharply, so the colour registers before the meaning does. Some players find squinting genuinely helps.

What does not work is telling yourself to ignore the word. Suppression takes effort and effort takes time, which is precisely what the task is measuring. Thirty seconds is short enough that you can feel your accuracy fall as concentration wears down, which is part of the point.
